Course Description: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are two of the most commonly occurring chronic diseases worldwide. Recent epidemiological surveys, basic research studies, and clinical trials substantiate the relationship between asthma and AR and highlight the need to adequately manage the entire respiratory tract.
Recent treatment guidelines present an integrated view of the upper and lower airways and recommend inhaled glucocorticosteroids (ICS) as the most effective treatment when used topically in the nose and lower airway. Despite safety evidence and published guidelines, however, these agents continue to be underprescribed by physicians and underused by patients. This educational activity will raise awareness of the effectiveness of therapy for control of AR and asthma, discuss risk/benefit considerations when making long-term therapy decisions, and explore monitoring methods for detecting the emergence of any side effects.
